A woman has been sentenced by the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court for fraud amounting to almost R140,000, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said on Friday.

Valecia Veruschka Diedericks, 31, was arrested in April and was served with summons to appear before the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court in May.

Hawks spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Captain Philani Nkwalasesaid, said the incident dated back to March 2009 when Diedericks embezzled over R137,000, by redirecting the money to her personal bank account. The funds were meant to pay a company rendering a service to the Hotazel combined school in the Northern Cape.

The Kuruman Magistrate’s Court found her guilty and imposed a seven-year sentence, wholly suspended for five years, on condition that she does not commit a similar crime.

She was further ordered to repay R115,817 through arranged payments agreements.

The Hawks welcomed the sentence.
