Various Units within the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape together with other stakeholders that include Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Department of Environment and Nature Conservation, SANPARK as well as Home Affairs conducted a multi-disciplinary operation called “Operation Phakisa”.

The three-day operation that started on 17 and ended on 19 June 2019, was conducted at Port Nolloth, Kleinsee and Alexander Bay. It focused on marine related crimes but had successes beyond its focus.

During the operation harbours and businesses were visited to check compliance while foot, air, border line and mine patrols were also conducted by respective teams suspects were arrested for various crimes.

Three suspects aged 16, 32 and 36 years were arrested for dealing in dagga after police raided their house in Port Nolloth and found dagga worth approximately R15 500. The minor was released in the care of a guardian and the suspects will appear before court soon.

In another incident an enquiry was opened after dagga valued at about R1 290 was found abandoned.

Fines worth about R1 300 were issued for different offences related to the Marine Act and two enquiries were opened into persons who were found to be in alleged illegal possession of bags filled with possible diamond gravel.

Two foreign nationals were also detained for contravention of the Immigration Act.

The Police Management in the Northern Cape thanked all the stakeholders for their tireless efforts and the role they played in ensuring that the operation is a success.
