The Sol Plaatje Municipal Manager, Thapelo Matlala, has been placed on precautionary suspension following allegations of corruption and maladministration. The decision was taken during a special council meeting on Tuesday.
The allegations against Matlala were first brought to light in a recent Sunday newspaper report, which claimed he was involved in corrupt dealings. The report further stated that Matlala is under investigation by the Office of the Public Protector and other law enforcement agencies.
The Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the suspension, stating it should be viewed as a necessary step for the city’s progress rather than a political maneuver. A spokesperson for the Chamber expressed relief at the council’s decision, emphasizing the critical need for a thorough investigation.
“I’m just very glad that a decision was made,” the spokesperson said. “I do believe that they need to continue investigations, have a look at the way forward and take it seriously… So the fact that he has been precautionarily suspended, we are very, very happy with that.”
The spokesperson also called for a swift investigation and the appointment of a qualified replacement, preferably from the Northern Cape, to lead the province and its citizens forward.
The suspension has elicited mixed reactions from residents. Some expressed deep concern that the leadership turmoil would further cripple already stagnant service delivery.
“We are very much worried and concerned… There is nothing that we believe will ever take place within our community. What is suspension?” one resident questioned, highlighting a sense of despair.
Other residents were more direct in their criticism, calling for Matlala’s outright removal. “I’m not worried; he can step down because they do not help us,” said another resident, who cited a lack of services on Bley Road. “They can leave. They are not doing anything for us.”
Another resident criticized the concept of a paid suspension, stating, “It means he’s getting paid for free now. So according to me, they must get rid of him and bring in somebody else that can do the job.”
This is not the first time the municipality has faced such instability. Before Matlala’s appointment, the position of Municipal Manager remained vacant for many years. His predecessor was also suspended following pressure from residents.
The Sol Plaatje Council has confirmed that the allegations against Matlala are now under formal investigation to determine a way forward for the municipality.
