Operation Phakisa in the Northern Cape kicked started on 28 June until 1 July, focused on crimes against marine products, crimes against wild species, illegal mining.
The South African Police Service together with other law enforcement agencies such as Department of Environment and Nature Conservation, Department of Agriculture, forestry and Fisheries, Department of Mineral and Resources, South African Maritime Shipping Authority, Department of Environmental Affairs and State Security Agency worked together to combat crime in the Port Nolloth, Alexandra Bay, KleinZee in Namaqua District.
During Operation Phakisa cordon and search was conducted , sea borderline patrols, patrol to combat illegal diamond mining, inspect and enforce compliance on fishing vessels and fishing permits.
Fines to the value of R5900 were issued against persons found not in possession of valid fishing permit and fishing vessels. Undocumented man was arrested subsequent to be found in possession of illegal mining implements. A vehicle was confiscated after found driving with a reported stolen engine.
Dagga with the street value of R6000 was found hidden underground during cordon and search at a house in Port Nolloth, one person was issued with a fine to the value of R2000 for being in possession of Rock Lobsters. Fines to the value of R1500 was also issued after a man found in possession of a carcass of an Oryx.
A vehicle was confiscated after found loaded with a sand suspected to be containing diamonds.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Risimati Peter Shivuri commended officials for the good work performed.
