The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Peter Risimati Shivuri hailed the triple life terms sentence handed down to child rapist, Moses Monnapula(45). Monnapula was sentenced by the Northern Cape High Court, subsequent to be found guilty of two counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape.
During June 2015 Moses Monnapula lured, two girls aged six and eight to his shack in Madiba Square in Galeshewe, where he kept them overnight and raped them. The girls went missing on June 27 2015 at approximately 6pm and community members launched a search.
The two girls were rescued the following day by community members after information led them to the shack were Moses kept them overnight.
The Northern Cape High Court, Acting Judge Vernon Smith when he delivered the sentence, said Monnapula failed to show remorse for his criminal actions and also failed to take responsibility for his criminal act.
Moses has been sentenced three years behind bars for each count of kidnapping, (count 1 & 2 kidnapping) and three life terms imprisonment for three counts of rape (count 3, 4 & 5 rape).
The sentences will run concurrently.
Furthermore the Acting Judge Vernon Smith declared him unfit to possess firearm, and ordered that his particulars must be registered in the National Register For Sex Offenders.
Monnapula has a series of previous convictions, including housebreaking, theft, rape, robbery, assault with intend to do grievous bodily harm, possession of drugs of which he served the sentences.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Shivuri applauded the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Duplessis from Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for his excellent investigative work which assisted the National Prosecuting Authority including Department of Justice to ensure that criminals such as Monnapula see no light of the day. “Harsh sentences will serve as deterrent to criminals”, he said.
