Three suspects aged between 38 and 43 years alleged to be part of a syndicate that exports poached abalone were denied bail at the Springbok Magistrates’ facing charges of contravening the Marine Living Resources Act.

On Tuesday, 11 December 2018, the Hawks Northern and Western Cape members in collaboration with Crime Intelligence, Springbok detectives and the local K9 unit intercepted a truck and an escort vehicle en route to Springbok, from the Western Cape with a consignment of abalone, allegedly destined for international markets.

Almost 144 474 units of abalone weighing 341kg, valued at approximately R787 000, were found concealed between packed meat products. The three suspects were arrested and the two vehicles were also seized. The trio is expected back in court again on 19 December 2018 for a formal bail application.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Kholekile Galawe, has applauded the multidisciplinary team efforts in their fight against trafficking of South Africa’s natural resources.
