Three male suspects were arrested on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, in Jericho on charges of pointing a firearm, common assault, and armed robbery following a coordinated police operation based on credible intelligence.
The arrests stem from reports that a group of suspects had entered a site used for illegal sand mining activities and allegedly abducted an African male victim. Later that same day, police received information that the victim had escaped and presented himself at the Jericho South African Police Service (SAPS) station.
During a formal interview, the victim alleged that unknown suspects had threatened him with a firearm, physically assaulted him, and robbed him of cash. Acting on this account, police members accompanied the victim to the identified location. Upon arrival, officers encountered a group of African males at the scene. The victim positively identified three individuals as the perpetrators, leading to their immediate arrest.
During a subsequent search of the scene, police recovered and seized a licensed firearm and ammunition. The three suspects were formally charged with pointing a firearm, common assault, and armed robbery. They are expected to appear before the Jericho Magistrate’s Court in the near future.
Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, commended the investigating officers for their swift response, effective intelligence utilisation, and collaborative efforts in resolving the case.
“The prompt action by our members ensured that dangerous suspects were removed from the community and that justice processes were initiated without delay,” Major General Naidoo stated.
The South African Police Service reaffirms its commitment to combating violent crime and illegal mining activities in the province and urges community members to continue sharing information to support law enforcement efforts.
