NORTH WEST – An intelligence-led police operation in the Taung policing precinct has resulted in the arrest of a 32-year-old suspect and the recovery of an unlicensed firearm, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West police, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, confirmed.
The coordinated intervention was initiated following intelligence reports of an alleged planned robbery targeting a delivery vehicle that services local tuck shops in Magogong. At approximately 12:30 on Friday, 17 July 2026, police units intercepted the suspects. One individual was taken into custody, while a second suspect evaded arrest and fled the scene.
During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered a 9mm pistol from the arrested suspect. A pellet gun, believed to have been discarded by the fleeing second suspect, was subsequently recovered in the village.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the recovered 9mm firearm is directly linked to a 2024 cash-in-transit security vehicle robbery in the Taung area. That earlier incident involved the theft of a substantial amount of money and the confiscation of firearms belonging to security officers.
The recovered firearm will undergo further forensic examination as the investigation continues. The case is currently being investigated by the Organised Crime Unit. The arrested suspect is scheduled to appear before the Taung Magistrates’ Court facing an initial charge of possession of a firearm without a licence, with the possibility of additional charges being added as the investigation progresses.
