For over 20 years, residents of Sannieshof and surrounding areas have endured untreated sewage flooding their homes and streets, creating unbearable living conditions and serious health risks. Despite repeated complaints, authorities have allegedly failed to take meaningful action, leaving families frustrated and desperate for solutions.

A Daily Struggle with Filth and Stench

Koos Swanepoel, an elderly resident, describes how sewage water constantly floods his yard, making daily life unbearable.

“I can’t enter my driveway because the sewage is lying in the street,” he says. “My vehicle’s tires are always dirty, and the smell is terrible. When people visit me, they complain about the stench.”

The crisis extends beyond Sannieshof town to areas like Agisanang and Pelindaba, where outdated and dysfunctional septic tanks frequently overflow. Residents say their complaints to the local municipality are ignored—and some even accuse officials of demanding bribes before addressing the issue.

“The municipality does not want to work,” one resident claims. “It takes five, six, seven complaints before anything gets done. And even then, after they clear the drains, they ask for bribe money.”

Health Risks Mount as Crisis Persists

Beyond the foul odor and unsightly mess, residents fear the long-term health effects of constant exposure to raw sewage. Many report respiratory problems, persistent coughing, and other illnesses linked to the contaminated environment.

One mother shares her distress over her 10-year-old son’s chronic nosebleeds, which began when he was just six months old. “This sewage problem is affecting our health,” she says. “My father is asthmatic because of it.”

Calls for Permanent Solutions

Frustrated by years of empty promises, some residents are demanding immediate infrastructure upgrades rather than temporary fixes.

“It is no longer good enough to tell us to wait for a truck,” says one community member. “We want a proper waterborne reticulation system and a fully functional wastewater treatment plant that meets daily demand and legal standards.”

Despite the outcry, neither the district nor local municipality has responded to the requests for comment.

As the sewage crisis drags on, Sannieshof’s residents continue to live in filth, pleading for authorities to finally take action before the situation worsens.
