Lebogang Cedrick Mokgatla (25) will languish in jail for 40 years. That is after Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court sentenced him on Thursday, 5 April 2017 for raping two women aged 25 and 22 in Wolmaransstad in 2013.

Mokgatla’s sentencing comes after his arrest by the police in Wolmaransstad for raping two women after threatening them with a knife in 2013. It was reported to the police that the victims were coming from a local tuck shop when the accused approached and threatened them with a knife. He then took them to an open field and raped them.

The matter was reported to the police and two counts of rape were registered. Following a thorough investigation and utilisation of investigative aids, Mokgatla was arrested on Sunday, 17 January 2016 after linked to the crime through DNA.

The court sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment for each count of rape. The sentences will run concurrently. During his sentencing, Mokgatla was declared unfit to possess a firearm or ammunition in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000).
