As part of dealing with activities relating to illicit economy, the Illicit Mining Task Team consisting of various police units and security companies arrested two more suspects in the evening on Sunday 10 November 2019, for possession of gold bearing material.

The suspects were arrested at Vaal Reefs 6 & 7 Shafts, near Orkney, after the team followed up on information. Despite a shootout that ensued between the illegal miners and the police, which led to an injury of a security guard, the determined team ensured apprehension of the suspects.

During the operation, the police seized a 40kg bag of gold bearing material and two batteries.

An attempted murder case is also being investigated.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court soon. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) is investigating.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane welcomed the arrest and congratulated the Task Team for their continuous efforts in ensuring that illicit mining operators are brought to book.
