The Illicit Mining Task Team arrested 31 suspects in the evening on Tuesday, 22 October 2019, for illicit mining, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspects were arrested at Vaal Reefs 2 Shaft near Orkney, after the team followed up on information. Despite a shootout that ensued between the illegal miners and the police, which led to an injury of a member, the determined team ensured apprehension of the suspects.

During the operation, the police seized an R1 Rifle, various assorted rounds of ammunition and 25kg of mercury, 21 cellular phones, a security bullet resistant vest and a large quantity of food that was kept underground.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court soon. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Hawks is investigating.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane congratulated the Task Team for their continuous efforts in ensuring that illicit mining operators are brought to book. She also warned that those who attack police officers will not be shown any mercy.
