Two farm attacks took place in the matter of three days in Ottosdal, in the North West Province of South Africa. Between 1 January 2020, and 15 July 2020, there have already been 203 farm attacks and 29 farm murders in the country.
In the first attack, on Tuesday 21 July 2020, at 08:15, Bettie Pieterse (79), who was alone at the time was attacked in her home by six attackers. Bettie was assaulted by the men and tied up. They continued the assault while demanding the safe keys from her. Firearms, jewelery and cash was robbed. The attackers then fled in the couple’s Mercedes Benz.
In the second attack, on 24 July 2020, at 09:00, on a farm on the outskirts of Ottosdal, Sarel van Zyl was woken by three attackers who were ransacking the home. The gardener was also attacked outside the home and tied up. van Zyl grabbed his firearm causing the attackers to flee, he fired a few warning shots and raised the alarm. After a well organised operation by local farmers all three were arrested at about 12:00.
