The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the North West on Thursday blasted the Speaker of the provincial legislature for what they termed electioneering under the disguise of public meetings.
“The North West Economic Freedom Fighters notes with dismay the continued and flagrant abuse of state funds by the ANC (African National Congress) for electioneering. The North West Legislature is now being blatantly looted by the ANC for electioneering under the disguise of public meetings,” said EFF chief whip Bunga Ntsangani.
“The North West Legislature is in recess, yet the Speaker issued a notice on the 25th July 2016 that there will be three public hearings from the 28th to the 30th July 2016 in three hotly contested municipalities. This smacks of blatant opportunism to attempt to use the last few days prior to the elections to make up dismally lost ground for the ANC.”
The Speaker of the North West provincial legislature, Sussana Dantjie, is set to hosts an engagement with the legislature programme at Boitumelong in Bloemhof on Thursday.
“The purpose of the event is to encourage a spirit of ensuring broader understanding and educating our people of Bokone-Bophirima [North West] on the role and responsibilities of the Legislature, with the aim of profiling the Legislature and enhancing oversight,” Dantjie said in a statement.
On Friday she is set to host a reconciliation, healing and renewal programme in Lethabong near Rustenburg.
“It also aims to reconcile, heal and renew the people of the North West province through actively involving participation of the religious sector together with relevant government bodies towards strengthening oversight and public participation,” she added.
Religious leaders from different church fraternities were expected to pray for the leadership of the North West province and for an incident free election day on August 3.
About 3,000 people from all five municipalities under the Bojanala District were expected to attend the event.
“There will be no campaigning for political parties, but a prayer session for local government elections,” she said.
