North West news: Education Activist Condemns Fatal Punishment of Grade 10 Learner, Calls for Justice and Policy Reform.

The death of a Grade 10 learner at Huhoodi High School in the North West has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of legal disciplinary measures in schools. Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has weighed in on the tragedy, condemning the incident as a violation of South Africa’s laws on corporal punishment and demanding accountability.

A Tragic and Preventable Incident

The learner, identified as Amantle Mocumi, reportedly collapsed and died after allegedly being subjected to physical punishment by educators. While the provincial education department has yet to issue a formal directive, preliminary reports suggest the child suffered a medical emergency during school hours.

Makaneta, speaking in an interview, expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that corporal punishment was abolished under the Bella Act, which prohibits any form of violence or degrading treatment against learners.

“This type of disciplinary measure is not in line with the laws of the country,” Makaneta stated. “The law enforcement agencies must work around the clock to ensure justice is served for the deceased learner and her family.”

Calls for Accountability and Policy Enforcement

Makaneta criticized the Department of Education for failing to provide clear guidance on disciplinary actions against the school and the implicated teacher. He urged authorities to act swiftly, warning against the common practice of transferring problematic educators to other schools without consequences.

“We’ve seen cases where teachers are simply moved to another school instead of facing accountability,” he said. “Some even bribe parents to drop cases. Money cannot bring back a child’s life—justice must prevail.”

The Need for Teacher Training and Awareness

The activist highlighted the importance of ongoing workshops for educators to understand updated policies, including the Bella Act, which redefines corporal punishment to include any form of humiliation or abuse.

“Many teachers may unknowingly violate these laws due to lack of awareness,” Makaneta explained. “School Governing Bodies must ensure policies are clearly communicated and enforced.”

A Wake-Up Call for Schools Nationwide

Makaneta described the incident as a “test case” that should serve as a lesson for educators across South Africa. He called for stricter vetting of teachers and greater involvement from parents and guardians in safeguarding students’ rights.

“This tragedy could have been avoided if alternative disciplinary measures were used,” he said. “We must ensure no other child suffers the same fate.”

As investigations continue, pressure mounts on education officials to take decisive action. For now, activists and the public await answers—and justice for Amantle Mocumi.
