Irate residents of Ramochana, near Rustenburg in North West, burnt a bus on Friday during a protest.
The bus was torched on the R510 near the Rustenburg Correctional Centre. Residents were reportedly protesting against the arrest of four people linked to the burning down of a shack belonging to Vusi Wolf, leader of the employment committee which oversees employment of locals at the Sibanye Platinum K6 Mine.
Police spokesman Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said a case of malicious damage to property was opened and no arrests had been made.
On May 19, Mpho Mosiapoa was released on R500 bail by the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court, and his case was postponed to June 29 for investigation, after he was arrested for allegedly burning down Wolf’s shack.
He allegedly set alight Wolf’s shack in Ramochana on May 13 following a tense community meeting. The community wanted Wolf to step down as leader of the employment committee, accusing him of taking bribes in exchanged for jobs at the mine.
Last month, a new committee to oversee the employment of Ramochana residents at local mines was elected during a heated meeting.
