The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West has expelled former Ditsobotla Local Municipality Mayor Mazwi Moruri and former Speaker Jarious Modisakeng after they were found guilty of misconduct and defying party directives.
The two were among 10 ANC councillors hauled before the party’s Provincial Disciplinary Committee (PDC) for bringing the party into disrepute and fueling divisions within the council. The charges stemmed from their alleged refusal to support the ANC’s preferred mayoral candidate as directed by the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).
Disciplinary Process and Outcomes
ANC Provincial Disciplinary Committee Chairperson Prof Vuyo Peach confirmed that while all 10 accused members were summoned, only eight attended the hearings. Moruri and Modisakeng initially appeared but later absented themselves, leading to a separation of proceedings.
After deliberations, the PDC ruled that Moruri and Modisakeng be expelled from the ANC with immediate effect, dating back to July 16, 2025. They were also ordered to pay R30,000 each in compensation to the ANC’s PEC within 60 days.
ANC Moves to Fill Vacancies
Louis Diremelo, an ANC representative, stated that the expelled councillors had not appealed the decision. The party will now notify the municipality of the vacancies, triggering a by-election process.
“We accept the PDC’s decision and are satisfied with the process,” Diremelo said.
Expelled Members Yet to Respond
Moruri and Modisakeng declined to comment, stating they had not been formally notified of the expulsion.
The expulsions highlight ongoing factional tensions within the ANC in Ditsobotla, a municipality plagued by instability and leadership disputes in recent years. The party has vowed to enforce discipline to restore unity ahead of upcoming elections.
