Alleged livestock thieves appears in court for stock theft and for possession of stolen livestock

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena congratulated the Stilfontein Stock Theft Unit after they arrested two of the five alleged stock theft suspects aged 33 and 43 in the early hours of Wednesday, 29 January 2020, in Jouberton township near Klerksdorp. Both suspects will appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 30 January 2020 for charges of Stock Theft and Possession of stolen livestock.

The suspects were nabbed after a farmer in the Paardeplaas area, near Hartbeesfontein, alerted the police that his sheep were stolen the previous night (Tuesday). According to information available at this stage 39 sheep were allegedly stolen from the farmer’s kraal.

The suspects, driving two vehicles, were arrested after they were stopped by police and could not give proper account for possession of 29 sheep found inside their vehicles.

More arrests are expected.

The Provincial Commissioner reminded all farmers and livestock owners to brand mark their livestock in accordance with the Animal Identification Act, 2002 (Act No. 6 of 2002).
