At a meeting outside Vaalwater on Friday, June, 10th rural security was discussed.

The meeting was addressed by Dr. Pieter Mulder, FF Plus leader, and Dr. Pieter Groenewald, FF Plus’ member of parliament. Also, present at the meeting was Louis Meintjes, President of TAU SA.

During his speech, Groenewald said that the disbanding of the commando system was a political blunder because the network assisted the police. It is not just farmers who benefited from the system, he said.

“I have great concern about the cruelty of farm murders – it spills over to the murders committed in the cities. Farm attacks are on the increase, and we now hear of up to 12 attackers arriving with AK47’s at a time.

“The world average for murder is about 7 per 100 000 people of the population. The mortality rate among our officers is 52 per 100 000, but if one looks at the number of farm murders, it stands at a startling 113 out of 100 000 people. The figure includes not only farmers but all who live on farms.

“This is a serious problem and does affect food security,” he said.

Groenewald said if you look at how many foreigners are involved in farm attacks, it seems that the threat from abroad is bigger than those within the country, he said. However, the police had no statistics to show how these numbers were specified.

The organizations such as AfriForum, who declared farm murders as a priority crime and TAU SA, were praised for their hard work. He said organizations will have to work together if they want to make a difference.

Groenewald spoke about the expropriation brought before parliament recently.

“Such laws generally abound all around the world. But what worries me is that the land expropriated, is then used to build up as public roads. The new law states that “public interest” is related to land reform. ”

He advised people to keep being involved and abreast of the law and to plan accordingly.

Mulder spoke about the future of agriculture and the expropriation. He said the law means that the government would take away the rightful owner of the property, including rooms in homes or vehicles and give it to someone else. However, Mulder then said that he dismissed this term as impractical and does not think it will be implemented because it would lead to serious conflict.

Mulder stressed about the importance of food security around the world and encouraged farmers to focus on their farms. He said the progress of farmers was in the best interest of every citizen.
