Man stabbed to death in a horrific attack

A father of Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) was stabbed to death on March 17, 2015 in a horrific attack on a smallholding outside Bela-Bela with a knife and a screwdriver.

Jakes van Deventer (35) has three young children – one with his fiancée, Monique de Souza, and two from a previous marriage. De Souza also has a child from a previous marriage.

An emergency service worker, who was at home at the Roodepoort smallholdings, said “the house looked like a slaughterhouse due to all the blood.”
“I have been doing this work for a long time, but I have not seen anything as horrific as this.”

De Souza fought back bravely when the four men broke in at a kitchen window and assaulted her severely.

The robbers stabbed her with a knife. They also put the knife against her and Jakes’ three-month-old baby’s head, where the baby slept in a cot beside the bed.

Monique fought back in such a manner that two of her fingers “were cut severely and hung like pieces of meat.” An operation needs to be done to save her fingers.

She took a kitchen knife, which is apparently kept near the bed for protection, grabbed one of the attackers’ arms and stabbed it with the knife. She also pulled the drawers from a nightstand and hit the men with it.

Her mother, with three other children went hiding in a spare bedroom. She told the children not to make any noise.

The murder of Van Deventer comes two weeks after Dr. Louis-John Botha (64) of Swartwater was killed on his farm.

The knife attack on Van Deventer is the fourth incident of its kind in the past few weeks in Bela-Bela. Police are investigating the possibility that the incidents are linked.
