Man in critical condition after armed robbery

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was shot in the chest by armed robbers, in broad daylight, on a smallholding in Elandshoek, near Cullinan.

John Jasper, police spokesperson, said the 55-year-old man was in his backyard when two men with guns approached him. A tussle ensued and shots were fired. The man was wounded in the hand and torso.

According to Jasper the two women in the house, believed to be the man’s daughter and daughter-in-law ran from the house when they heard the shots. “The robbers dragged them back into the house and tied them. They ransacked the home and stole mobile phones, electrical appliances and an undisclosed amount of cash. They also took a gun from the safe.”

The robbers stole a Corsa vehicle that was on the property, and fled. The car was later found a short way from the house where it overturned.

“The victim was rushed to the Steve Biko Hospital. He is in a critical condition,” Jasper said. The women suffered minor injuries, but was not hospitalized.

A case of attempted murder and robbery is investigated. No suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
