The Mankweng Regional Court outside the City of Polokwane has slapped Peter Lucas Sinclair aged 69, with long jail terms on counts of sexual and indecent assaults.

Sinclair, a former Bishop of a well-known church in the Westenburg Policing area near Polokwane was arrested for several charges of sexual assault and Indecent assault involving his congregants.

The accused was caught in the act by some church numbers during January 2016. He was seen inappropriately touching fellow female congregants and the matter was immediately reported to the Police.

Cases of sexual assaults and indecent assaults were opened and assigned to the Saps Polokwane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The suspect was arrested immediately.

The Police investigations later revealed that six more cases of Indecent assaults and that of sexual assaults had occurred during 2006 and 2016. All these cases were then registered and investigated. It was found that the accused targeted victims aged between 14 and 19.

Sinclair was convicted of these offences on the 5 November 2019, by the same court and this week, he was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment without option of the fine for indecent assaults, sexual assaults and attempted sexual assaults.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Major General Samuel Manala welcomed these jail terms imposed to the “so called man of God” and he commended the Saps Polokwane Cluster Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for their diligence and commitment in ensuring the accused faced the full might of the law.

We hope that this will bring closure to all these victims and it will also send a strong message to all the rapists and rapists to be, that crime does not pay, concluded General Manala.
