Six years ago, Kuhlula Ndhima made a life-changing decision that left her family and associates stunned: she walked away from her successful career as a lawyer to become a full-time farmer. Today, her thriving mixed farming enterprise—producing poultry, vegetables, and mangoes—stands as a testament to her courage and vision.
A Bold Leap into Farming
At 40, Ndhima from Tarentaalrand used her entire retirement savings to purchase a 36-hectare farm in 2019, diving headfirst into agriculture despite having no prior experience.
“The intention was never to farm, but I fell in love with it,” she admits. “I used every cent I had, knowing that if I could produce and contribute to food security, the rewards would come.”
What began as a risky venture has since flourished. Her farm, now employing over 20 workers, boasts expansive poultry coops for egg production, as well as green peppers, tomatoes, mangoes, and citrus fruits.
Empowering the Next Generation
Ndhima’s success has only fueled her ambition. Recently acquiring an additional 21 hectares, she aims to create opportunities for young agriculture students struggling to find practical training.
“Many students study agriculture but don’t know where to gain experience,” she says. “I want to provide a space where they can learn, train, and eventually start their own farms.”
Changing Lives Through Farming
Employees at Nema Farming Holdings attest to the farm’s transformative impact. One worker shared, “Working here has opened my eyes. I’ve learned my strengths, weaknesses, and the power of teamwork.” Another recalled starting with just one chicken and witnessing the farm’s remarkable growth.
A Call for Support
Despite her achievements, Ndhima faces financial challenges and has appealed to the government and private sector for funding to expand her operations further.
Her story is a powerful reminder that with determination, even the boldest risks can yield extraordinary rewards. As Ndhima puts it, “If you produce something valuable, the money will come back one day.”
For now, this former lawyer-turned-farmer continues to sow seeds of success—both in her fields and in the lives of those she employs.
