Farm murder: Body of missing Northam farmer found, farm workers arrested

A farm murder took place on 6 September 2022, at Maroelasfontein farm, in Northam, in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The body of the Nikolaas Johannes Steenkamp (59) was found by employees at Maroelasfontein farm on Tuesday 6 September 2022, a day after he went missing.

According to the information received, the victim went to work on a pump in the company of his employee on Monday, 5 September 2022.

It is further alleged that he then left this employee at around 10:00 and was never seen again until his body was found by other employees the next day at about 14:30.

The body was tied up with cables.

The suspects thereafter went on to steal jewellery and laptop from the drop safe.

Members of Visible Policing, Rural Safety Partners in Policing, Fire and Rescue in Policing and Detectives from the District followed the leads and four workers were arrested.

During the arrest, Police recovered some of stolen items, a laptop and cellphone.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the team, for arresting the suspects and recovering the robbed items.

The relentless efforts by the team probing the murder of the 59-year-old farmer, Nikolaas Johannes Steenkamp and house robbery at Maroelafontein farm in Northam, paid off when the fifth suspect was arrested on the evening of 7 September 2022, in the North West Province.

Detectives from Northam and Mogwase police stations conducted a well-coordinated intelligence driven operation after receiving information on the whereabouts of the suspect.

The information led the team to a location at Holfontein, North West Province where the suspect, a foreign national, was arrest in his rented room. The other four suspects were arrested earlier on 7 September 2022.

The safe that was taken from the scene, was recovered and had already been grinned.

Police also recovered a lot of jewellery.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the members for the cooperation and well-coordinated operation that led to the arrest of the outstanding suspect.

The five suspects, four men and a woman are expected to appear in Northam magistrate court soon facing charges of murder and house robbery.
