A fugitive with alleged links to a northern KwaZulu-Natal jailbreak which left two police officers dead last week was shot and killed on Monday.
The two officers were shot during an escape bid from police holding cells in Nyoni. Both died after being rushed to hospital.
The officers had gone to the police holding cells on Thursday and were overpowered by the two prisoners who took their guns and shot them.
Another officer, who had been in the charge office, then took out his gun and starting shooting at the prisoners.
One of the prisoners was shot dead while the second fled.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said on Monday that the second prisoner was tracked down by police officers.
“The suspect who escaped from police cells during the shooting of police officers at Nyoni has been shot and killed by the police,” Zwane said.
“The members followed up information about his whereabouts at Mandeni this morning. At about 12:00 he was seen in the area and he ran away when police attempted to arrest him.
“It is alleged that he was firing at the police and the police returned fire. A firearm was found from the suspect and [he] was identified as 18-year-old Senzo Dube.”
