Emergency services are currently at the scene after a small plane crashed into the ocean off Suncoast Beach in Durban earlier yesterday. The aircraft, reportedly performing aerial displays, went down near Virginia Airport, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.
Details of the Crash
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, a video circulating on social media shows the aircraft conducting maneuvers before plunging into the surf. Initial reports suggest the pilot was the sole occupant, and they remain missing.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), lifeguards, and paramedics are on-site, with helicopters and boats deployed to scour the waters. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that wreckage from the light aircraft has washed ashore, but the pilot has yet to be located.
Ongoing Search Efforts
Despite fading daylight, rescue teams are continuing their efforts, aided by windy conditions and rough seas, which may help dislodge debris. Colonel Netshiunda stated that operations would continue as long as conditions permit, though it remains unclear whether the search will extend through the night.
“We have teams in the water, underwater divers, and personnel combing the beach,” Nichunda said. “We will assess the situation as weather changes.”
Uncertainty Over Pilot’s Fate
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the missing pilot or the cause of the crash. Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage and review eyewitness accounts, including the viral video of the aircraft’s final moments.
As night falls, rescue teams face increasing challenges, but officials remain hopeful that the pilot may still be found. Updates are expected as the operation progresses.
