Durban police have recovered 27 firearms, over 2,000 rounds of live ammunition and 50 canisters of gun powder near Chatsworth in Durban, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said members of the Bellair SAPS were conducting crime prevention duties in their area when they received information about a home at Hillary in Bellair which reportedly had a large number of firearms.

“The members proceeded to the said home and it was searched,” Zwane said.

“Twenty seven different types of firearms were seized from the house. Six of them were licensed to the house owner who passed away and the other 21 were unlicensed with serial numbers erased.”

Zwane said the recovered firearms included Colt 45 pistols, a 308 Smith and Weston, .45 pistols and a Ruby .32 rifle.

“An inquiry has been registered at Bellair SAPS for further investigation,” Zwane said.

Zwane said no arrest had been made at this stage and police were investigating.
