No Leniency for Lawless Criminals during Lockdown

Blue Security made some significant arrests and recovery of household items in the greater Durban area on Wednesday.

The arrest of two suspects in Assagay in the early hours of Wednesday morning occurred after Blue Security Tactical Teams and armed response officers observed two men walking along Kassler Road at about 2.30am. “The teams were busy with routine patrols and standoffs when they spotted the two suspects,” said Blue Security’s Highway Area Tactical Ambassador, Russel Lawson.

“Suspicions increased when the men’s explanations of their movements did not justify them being on the road at that time of night,” Mathios said. “Hillcrest SAPS were summoned who arrived and took the suspects to the charge office for further investigations. The men were found to be in possession of knives and various items which could not be accounted for,” Lawson said.

“There is a strong possibility that these two suspects could be part of a gang linked to various housebreakings and home invasions in the Assagay area. Other charges include being in contravention of the COVID-19 Lockdown regulations,” Lawson said.

In a separate incident follow-up investigations and intelligence received, relating to the theft of two laptops in Amanzimtoti on Saturday, elicited positive results.

“A Blue Security reaction officer was successful in tracing the whereabouts of two laptops on Wednesday. The laptops had been removed from a home in Athol Paton Drive, Amanzimtoti on Saturday during a housebreaking,” Blue Security Tactical Ambassador for Amanzimtoti, Eugene Engelbrecht said.

“Important information was relayed to the officer after the theft. This led the officer to the whereabouts of the laptops where they were recovered on Wednesday. Chain-of-evidence statements have been submitted to the investigating officer. The identity of a suspect is now known to the detectives in charge. He is now being sought by the authorities,” Engelbrecht said.

In a third incident stolen goods were recovered on the Bluff on Wednesday following a break-in earlier in the day.

“The owner of the business property had arrived to check on the premises. While inside on the second floor he heard noises on the ground floor. Suspects had broken the back window and forced the burglar bars to access a variety of extension cords stored inside,” Engelbrecht said.

“Our reaction officer in the area immediately responded to the alert and chased after the suspect. Although unsuccessful in apprehending the suspect, who evaded arrest by escaping over the railway line, the reaction officer did recover the bags of stolen extension cable,” he said.”The recovered extension cables were returned to the business owner. Brighton Beach SAPS attended the scene and investigations are continuing,” he said.

In a success in Morningside, a suspect was apprehended after removing a floodlight from Eleventh Avenue. The reaction officer patrolling the area raced to the scene after notification that CCTV footage had recorded a suspect in the area. The suspect was apprehended and handed over to Metro Police who had stood down. The man was charged with theft from property as well as contravening COVID-19 Lockdown regulations.
