DURBAN – A man has been arrested in connection with cultivating dagga and being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.

Durban flying squad and narcotics task team officers received a tip-off about drugs being manufactured in a house at the Bluff in Durban, spokesman Major Shooz Magudulela said.

A sting operation was conducted at a “mansion” in the suburb, which led to police discovering a laboratory which produced dagga using hydroponic systems and “stolen electricity from the municipality pole”.

Hydroponic dagga plants valued at about R100,000 were confiscated. A-57-year-old man was arrested and also found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He would be charged with manufacturing and dealing in drugs and possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition. He was expected to appear in court on Monday, Magudulela said.
