National News: Four people brutally murdered in Maphumulo

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa condemned the brutal killing of four people at Maphumulo. He strongly urges different community formations to remain vigilant and continue to supply the police with the information that will assist them in arresting the perpetrators. “Possession of illegal firearms contributes immensely to murder of innocent members of the community and as a result the possession thereof by any individual must be reported to the police. A task team has been formed to investigate the murders of four people,” he said.

It is alleged that Saturday, 2 July 2016 at approximately 17:00, at Ndaba area, Maphumulo, the three victims were attending a traditional ceremony when unknown suspects opened fire towards them. Two people died at the scene and the other was rushed to hospital where he succumbed due to injuries sustained. Again on Sunday 3 July 2016, at about 04:00, a 30-year-old man was also shot while sleeping in the house where there was a traditional ceremony.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The names of the deceased are Steven Khumalo (30), Mthokozisi Khuzwayo (31), Syanda Khuzwayo (35) and Phumlani Mpungose (40). The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. Police are appealing to anyone who might have information about the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the police or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
