CIT robber shot dead, security officers injured in shootout, Tongaat

The Reaction Unit South Africa Robinson R44 Helicopter assisted in conducting an aerial search in Tongaat, KZN for heavily armed suspects who fled the scene of a cash in transit robbery in a Red Kia and a white VW Polo.

The RUSA Operations Centre received multiple calls from the public reporting a gun battle between robbers and security officers at Shoprite U Save on Gopalall Hurbans Road on Thursday 10 December 2020.

All available Reaction Officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 15:49 and on arrival established that was one suspect had been killed during the shootout. A second suspect was injured and apprehended in the vicinity of the shooting. He was found in possession of a 9mm Glock 19 firearm.

A Security Officer based at the store was shot in the leg. The driver of the Cash In Transit vehicle was also injured by shrapnel after the suspects opened fire on his vehicle. Several spent rifle and 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.

Reaction Officers are currently searching for the outstanding suspects.
