Hijacker shot in Johannesburg police chase

A suspected car thief was shot as police chased after a vehicle to Campus Square shopping centre on Saturday morning.

He was one of the three arrested for allegedly stealing the car in Killarney, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

An area was cordoned off in the basement parking at the back of the mall.

The front of the silver VW was parked on a pile of rubble.

Paramedics were seen wheeling a man away on a stretcher.

Dlamini said the suspect was shot in the leg and would remain under police guard.

“Members of the flying squad saw a suspicious vehicle on Empire Road. They followed it but it drove away from them. Members fired several shots until they stopped the vehicle.”

He said officials found ‘car breaking implements’.

The men were likely to appear in court on Monday for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
