Government department robbed

PRETORIA – Police are searching for a group of robbers who broke into the offices of the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities.

The robbers entered the building in Pretoria, holding security guards at gunpoint. Several offices were then ransacked. Police say the robbers made off with computers, laptops and plasma TVs.

A case of robbery and theft has been opened, but there have been no arrests so far.

The ministry works closely with the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).

Sassa has reportedly spent R10-million on bodyguards for its top staff members.

One of the officials has also reportedly uncovered corruption at the agency.

Police say there’s no link at this stage between the break-in and the controversy at Sassa…
