Two robbery suspects were fatally wounded and a third was injured during a shootout with police on the R25 in Kempton Park on Wednesday.
Police crime intelligence had received information about suspects planning to rob a courier vehicle in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni. A surveillance team located vehicles matching the description and followed them to the R25. As police attempted to stop the cars, occupants of a white Volkswagen Jetta opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Two suspects were declared dead at the scene. One injured suspect was taken to a hospital under police guard.
Inside the Jetta, police recovered two firearms, blue lights, and police reflector jackets. The search for suspects who fled in a separate vehicle is ongoing. The recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing for connections to other crimes.
