PRETORIA, Gauteng — The South Africa Presidency has firmly rejected recent claims by Ghana suggesting the nation faces diplomatic isolation on the continent. Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya dismissed the narrative as “fake news,” emphasizing that President Cyril Ramaphosa remains actively and strategically engaged with both African and global partners.
According to Magwenya, there is a concerted effort by Ghana to portray South Africa as being isolated domestically and across the African continent due to recent migration protests. The Spokesperson also clarified a key diplomatic detail: the Bi-National Commission between South Africa and Ghana was postponed at Pretoria’s request. This directly contradicts false claims circulated by Ghanaian officials suggesting that they were the ones who initiated the delay.
To counter the isolation narrative, the Presidency highlighted President Ramaphosa’s robust and recent diplomatic schedule. On July 10, the President and his delegation of ministers and senior government officials were warmly received by French President Emmanuel Macron. This high-level meeting affirmed France as a key strategic partner, reinforcing a longstanding bilateral cooperation that spans trade and investment, energy, defense, education, people-to-people exchanges, and other critical fields. During the engagement, the leaders exchanged views on global developments of mutual interest and reviewed progress in advancing bilateral priorities.
Earlier that same day, President Ramaphosa co-chaired the leaders group meeting of the high-level steering committee on education alongside the director-general of UNESCO. He also attended the Transforming Education Summit Plus 4.
The Presidency described these recent international engagements as highly productive and outcomes-oriented. South Africa, the statement noted, was honored to participate in shaping the future of global education, which serves as the bedrock upon which the entire Agenda 2030 framework rests.
Ultimately, Magwenya concluded that these actions demonstrate a South Africa and a president that are fully engaged and committed to contributing toward a better Africa and a better world, firmly dispelling any notions of diplomatic retreat or isolation.
