Shortly before 08H30 Friday morning Netcare 911 responded to reports of a structural collapse at a high school in Vanderbijlpark.
Reports from the scene indicate that multiple people sustained injuries when a bridge collapsed, believed to have trapped people in the process.
Multiple people have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, at least five people are in a critical condition and four people are believed deceased.
Rescue teams are on the scene and the number of patients and their injuries are subject to change as rescue efforts continue.
Rescue teams on scene have confirmed that three people have been declared deceased when a walkway collapsed at a high school in Vanderbijlpark, five people have sustained critical injuries, three of the critically injured have been airlifted to an appropriate hospital, multiple other people have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.
Circumstances leading up to the bridge collapsing is unknown pending a report from structural engineers and SAPS who have cordoned off the area.
The deceased are believed to be school children.
