The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has welcomed the four life sentences handed to multiple murderer, Mongezi William Mncunukelwa by the Palm Ridge High Court on Thursday 5 March 2020.

The Provincial Commissioner also applauded the police officers who worked with enthusiasm and zeal to ensure that this heartless murderer is permanently removed from the society.

Mncunukelwa was on Tuesday found guilty of four counts of murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was sentenced to life for each count of murder and further three years for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Four other accused who appeared alongside Mncunukelwa were all found guilty of tampering with the crime scene and each sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.

On 22 June 2017, four people, Peter Pholle, Welcome Godlo, Sithandile Ngungwana and Sifiso Msibi were shot and killed inside a shack in Katlehong South in Ekurhuleni and Mncunukelwa was linked to all these murders.

It was also established that the four co-accused, Sanele Magida, Paseka Mahloromela, Vuyolethu Kilani and Mkhululi Mahlangu removed the bodies and dumped them in the nearby open veld.

Mncunukelwa escaped twice from lawful custody. At first, he escaped at Johannesburg Prison with 15 awaiting prisoners in January 2018 and they were all rearrested. He escaped again at Johannesburg High Court in December the same year, where again he was arrested.

Before the sentencing today, Mncunukelwa was already serving three life sentences and 18 years imprisonment for murders and other crimes he committed before.
