Sunday afternoon Drift Reaction cc received an urgent call for assistance from a property in Elandsdrift near Muldersdrift. The client reported that family members had found the body of their murdered father Manie Steyn (53) in his house on the property.
According to reports the family had a braai the previous evening and Manie was still fine when everyone left. The family phoned him yesterday morning as they wanted to visit to help to clean up after the braai. He did not answer his cell phone.
After numerous attempts they decided to drive through as he never slept late. When they arrived they found the front door wide open and saw the blood and blood smears leading from the door to the inside of the house. They discovered his body with three bullet holes in his chest in his bedroom next to his safe.
It is unknown how the suspects gained entry into the house as the door was not forced – it might be that Manie went outside to give his dog a bone as a bone was found close to where the trail of blood started.
It is evident that they shot him at the door and he succeeded to get to his bedroom and locked the door and get to his firearm. The bedroom door was kicked open by the suspects. It is not known what transpired in the room but his body was found next to his open safe and his firearm was missing.
Footprints in the blood and outside shows that three suspects were involved. Other information at the scene was obtained but I am not going into detail as this might jeopardize the investigation.
Numerous items of value was stolen.
Our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Our CEO Jarques Treptow also knew Manie for many years.
We regard this as an extremely personal attack and the Criminal Intervention Squad was at the scene yesterday, assisted the family and also tasked informers.
