Parktown Boys High: Former assistant water polo coach sentenced

The South African Police Service (SAPS) welcomes the lengthy jail sentence handed down to Mr Collan Rex, a former assistant water polo coach at Parktown Boys High School at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court this morning, 29 November 2018.

The 23 year old who initially faced 327 charges was today found guilty on 144 counts of sexual assault and 12 counts on common assault.

From today, Rex will serve an effective 23 years imprisonment sentence for the crimes that he committed in 2016.
A total of 23 boys were complainants in this case and were aged between 13 and 16 years old. The abuse of these boys came to light in 2016 when Rex was caught on surveillance footage allegedly fondling a 15 year old pupil’s genitals.

When handing down judgment, the Judge said that the accused violated the children’s rights and did not show any remorse. In his remarks, he added that, the boys were suicidal and psychologically affected and their school performance had been drastically affected due to the deeds of the accused. He added that the offender does not belong to society and that his name would be added to the sexual offence registrar.
