A Newclare man, a father of a 4 year old boy who was treated at Rahima Moosa Hospital for burn wounds, was among 27 suspects who were arrested at the Sophiatown policing area since Tuesday 27 November 2018. He appeared at the Sophiatown Magistrate’s Court on 29 November 2018 and his case was postponed until 16 January 2019.

The abuse of the boy was discovered in July this year where the victim was taken to the hospital with burn marks on the body. It is suspected that he was burnt with a cigarette. He was treated and the abuse was reported to the police. The arrest was effected on Tuesday, 27 November 2018 this week and the suspect appeared in court.

Police are also appealing to the parents or families to report any form of child abuse. Any person who knows or who fails to report a crime especially serious and violent crimes against young children, may be guilty of an offence.

Other suspects were arrested for various crimes including possession of drugs, armed robbery, housebreaking and theft, assault with grievous bodily harm and theft out of a motor vehicle.

The arrests form part of the continuing operation “Clampdown” targeting gang and drug related crimes in Westbury and surrounding areas in Sophiatown. These arrest were affected as follows:

11 arrests for possession of drugs, 8 arrests for assault with grievous bodily harm, 3 arrests for housebreaking and theft, 2 arrests for armed robbery and 1 arrest for possession of suspected stolen property, theft out of motor-vehicle and intimidation.
