The Van Zyl couple, Waldi and his wife Cynthia were attacked and brutally tortured by six attackers on their farm on 27 September 2020, between 17:00 and 18:00, in Spitskop, Bronkhorstspruit, in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Farmers and concerned citizens gathered outside the Bronkhorstspruit court on Friday morning 9 October 2020, where one of the arrested attackers was appearing.
The mass peaceful protest is part of a growing stand against farm attacks, farm murders and attacks on the white minority in the country. The ANC government denies the existence of these atrocities and The South African police minister, Bheki Cele, has refused to make these attacks priority crimes and recently said that ‘farmers must not complain if they get hurt.’
Among other horrific acts, Waldi’s one leg was cut with an angle grinder. Cynthia’s nose was pinched in a vice grip and twisted as they demanded a large sum of money they thought the couple had.
The couple sustained terrible injuries, Waldi’s are life threatening, he also sustained skull and facial fractures and will be operated on, he was taken with a helicopter to a Johannesburg hospital, and Cynthia via ambulance to Witbank.
