FREE STATE – Two men have been arrested for possession of explosives in Meloding after a coordinated, intelligence-led operation successfully intercepted an alleged illegal sale. The joint effort between the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) and Thabong Crime Intelligence resulted in the discovery and confiscation of dangerous materials at a residential dwelling in the Lejweleputswa District.
On Tuesday, 14 July 2026, members of the Welkom AGU acted on credible information provided by Thabong Crime Intelligence. The intelligence indicated that the suspects were unlawfully in possession of explosives and were actively seeking to sell the materials to interested buyers. This actionable intelligence was rapidly operationalized, directing law enforcement officers to a specific address in the Senzela Section of Meloding.
Upon arrival at the identified residence, authorities conducted a search of the premises. During the search, police discovered eleven (11) cone-pack explosives. To ensure public safety, the specialized Explosives Unit was immediately summoned to the scene to safely handle, secure, and remove the hazardous materials.
The eleven cone-pack explosives were officially confiscated and booked as evidence. The two suspects, aged 37 and 47, were formally arrested for contravening Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956. Authorities have confirmed that the accused are expected to appear before the Virginia Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face the charges.
The successful operation highlights the ongoing synergy between Crime Intelligence and the Anti-Gang Unit in disrupting illegal firearms and explosives networks within the district.
