FREE STATE – Law enforcement authorities have successfully apprehended three suspects linked to a severe taxi extortion incident on the N8 highway between Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu. The arrests mark a decisive resolution to a chilling late-night ordeal in which a public transport vehicle was intercepted, and its occupants were forced to surrender money under threatening circumstances.

The harrowing event unfolded on Thursday, 25 June 2026, at approximately 23:45. A taxi driver was ferrying 15 passengers, a group that included young children and elderly individuals, on a long-distance route from Botshabelo to Durban. According to Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, a Toyota Hilux GD6 bearing provincial registration plates aggressively overtook the Toyota Quantum taxi at high speed. The Hilux then braked recklessly directly in front of the minibus, forcing it to an abrupt halt.

Three male individuals emerged from the pickup truck and confronted the driver, demanding to know who had granted him permission to operate on their designated route. Even after the driver presented his valid long-distance operating permit, the men disregarded the documentation and ordered all passengers out of the vehicle, leaving them stranded in the freezing, pitch-black conditions.

When the driver clarified that he did not have any cash to meet their unlawful demands, one of the individuals began removing the passengers’ luggage from the attached trailer. Terrified for their safety and enduring sub-zero temperatures, the stranded commuters collectively gathered their funds. They managed to raise R2,500.00, which was handed to the driver to pay off the suspects, ultimately securing their safe departure.

Following the incident, the victims reported the crime, and a formal case of extortion was opened at the Selosesha Police Station on 1 July 2026 for further investigation.

The breakthrough in the investigation occurred on Monday, 13 July 2026. Members of the Mangaung Metro District Operational Command Centre (DOCC) East Task Team were called into action while on their scheduled rest days. Through diligent and meticulous investigative efforts, the task team successfully tracked down all three suspects—aged 44, 58, and 80—apprehending them between 14:00 and 17:00 across multiple locations.

Provincial Police Commissioner Gen. Thabang Lesia strongly condemned the criminal behavior, emphasizing that the intimidation of public transport operators and extortionate practices will not be tolerated in the province.

“Forcing vulnerable citizens, including the elderly and young children, out into the freezing cold to demand a ransom is both heartless and unlawful,” Gen. Lesia stated, reinforcing the police’s commitment to pursuing those involved in such illegal activities.

The three arrested individuals are expected to make their first appearance before the Thaba Nchu Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face formal charges.
