The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will commemorate United Nations International Peacekeepers Day on Thursday at De Brug in Bloemfontein, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers who lost their lives in peacekeeping missions over the past two decades.
The ceremony will pay tribute to the dedication and professionalism of UN peacekeepers, with families of fallen heroes and heroines participating in a wreath-laying ceremony. The event serves as a solemn remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of global peace.
Admiral Prince Tshabalala, speaking ahead of the event, emphasized the significance of the day, stating, “We are reflecting, remembering, and honoring our soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in peacekeeping duties. This ceremony allows us to thank their families and reaffirm that their sacrifices were not in vain.”
South Africa has been a key contributor to UN peacekeeping missions since 1999, playing a pivotal role in stabilizing conflict zones such as Burundi, South Sudan, and Mozambique. The SANDF’s participation aligns with the country’s foreign policy, promoting peace, human rights, and conflict resolution across the continent.
“Peacekeeping is a broad term that supports foreign policy,” Admiral Tshabalala noted. “Our military serves as a diplomatic tool, ensuring South Africa remains a key player in regional stability.”
The commemoration underscores the nation’s commitment to silencing the gun in Africa while strengthening bilateral relations through peacekeeping efforts. Families of the fallen will also receive psychosocial support as part of ongoing efforts to honor their loved ones’ legacies.
The event is expected to be a dignified tribute to those who dedicated their lives to peace and security worldwide.
