After the Bloemfontein city hall was burned down by members of the municipal workers’ union, SAMWU, police apparently arrested three people, and they were charged with malicious damage to property.

Later fourteen other individuals were also charged and are expected to appear before the court, but it is not yet clear on what charges they will appear.

In the meantime, the FF Plus has filed a complaint of malicious damage to property against the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) as well as its provincial secretary, Thabang Tseoua.

Mr. Devar Smit, FF Plus councilor in the Bloemfontein metro, filed the complaint at the Park Road police station.

Earlier on The FF Plus, through Councilor Dr. Elizabeth Snyman-Van Deventer advised SAMWU to keep its members in check after protesters damaged electrical cables in neighborhoods such as Botshabelo and Dan Pienaar.

Tseoua strongly reacted to the notice by denying any allegations of violence by SAMWU members and said to the Bloemfontein Newspapers: “The FF Plus sucks these allegations out of its thumb and has to prove any mistakes by our members. If so, they must report it to the police and the guilty workers must be disciplined.”

“That’s exactly what we have done today. It was Mr. Tseoua and his organization’s duty to control their members during this prolonged strike, and they are implicated in the destruction of a unique heritage asset and other property and should be criminally prosecuted,” said Smit.
