FREE STATE — The latest Odendaalsrus copper cable theft arrests have successfully removed over three-quarters of a ton of stolen railway infrastructure from the illegal scrap metal market. Acting on actionable intelligence regarding a major theft, a specialized joint task force intercepted the illicit materials and detained four individuals in connection with the sabotage.
The breakthrough occurred on Monday, 20 July 2026, when the Operation Ukubuza team collaborated with the Dimension Infrastructure Crimes Team, local law enforcement from Odendaalsrus and Wolmaransstad, and Transnet Senqobile Security. According to the spokesperson for the joint task force, the multi-agency unit operationalized critical tips pointing to Transnet copper cables that were initially hijacked in the Wolmaransstad area.
The intelligence guided the operatives to a scrap metal recycling facility situated in the Kutlwanong township. During the raid, the spokesperson for Transnet Senqobile Security confirmed that officers positively identified and confiscated a massive haul of the stolen railway material. The seized copper cable weighed in at exactly 766 kilograms, carrying an estimated market value of R150,000.
Following the recovery of the goods, the police spokesperson announced that four male suspects, whose ages range from 25 to 38, were taken into custody. The men are facing serious charges of possession of suspected stolen property, as well as tampering with, damaging, and destroying essential national infrastructure.
Furthermore, the spokesperson for the Dimension Infrastructure Crimes Team highlighted that the oldest suspect in the group, a 38-year-old male, faces a supplementary charge for contravening the Immigration Act. All four accused individuals are scheduled to make their first court appearance at the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
