The Free State police have launched a massive search operation for 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi, a Grade 11 learner from Martie Du Plessis Special School in Fichardtpark, Bloemfontein. The teenager’s disappearance has sparked fears amid a surge in kidnappings across the country.
Kidnapping Under False Pretenses
According to reports, the incident occurred when suspects allegedly impersonating police officers kidnapped Kamogelo. A witness, believed to be the driver who usually transports the learner, reported that the suspects drove a vehicle fitted with blue lights and a police radio. One suspect was wearing a police uniform, while the other was in civilian clothing.
The driver recounted that the suspects’ vehicle maneuvered between his car and another before speeding away in a westerly direction along Vereeniging Drive. One of the suspects was reportedly fluent in Sesotho and mentioned a name, adding to the chilling details of the abduction.
Case Handed Over to the Hawks
Authorities have since escalated the investigation, with the case now being handled by the elite Hawks unit. Police are expected to provide further updates following an ongoing meeting.
Meanwhile, the Free State Department of Education has arranged psychosocial counseling for learners and teachers at Martie Du Plessis School, where the incident has caused significant distress.
Community Outrage and Calls for Action
The disappearance has drawn sharp criticism from community leaders and political figures, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who visited the school to assess the situation. A spokesperson emphasized the need for collective action, stating:
“This is not an isolated incident. We’ve seen similar cases where criminals impersonate police officers to kidnap victims. The police must up their game, and the community must stand together to fight this syndicate.”
The EFF also urged government intervention, calling for increased resources to combat kidnapping syndicates that appear to be targeting Bloemfontein.
Candlelight Vigil Planned
The Department of Education has announced that a candlelight prayer session will be held outside the school gates later today, where parents, learners, and concerned community members will gather to pray for Kamogelo’s safe return.
This incident follows the high-profile disappearance of Lerato Masiu, whose family is still pleading for her safe return, further highlighting the growing kidnapping crisis in the Free State.
Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward as the search for Kamogelo intensifies.
