A controversial administrator, with alleged financial skeletons in his closet, has now been appointed in charge of the Mafube local municipality (Frankfort, Villiers, Gemini, and Cornelia).

At a special council meeting of the municipality, the administrator was appointed on 2 May 2017 and replaced by the ANC-controlled Council by Mojalefa Matlole. Matlole apparently has a notorious reputation associated with several scandals.

Matlole was previously the city manager of the Mangaung Metro (Bloemfontein, Botshabelo, Van Stadensrus, Wepener, Thaba Nchu, Dewetsdorp) and charged with fraud involving more than R150 million in 2005. He was later appointed as administrator of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in North West where he was also involved in controversies. His company, Lefanosi Construction, is involved in several scandals.

Mr. Wouter Wessels, FF Plus MPL in the Free State legislature, said it is an absolute disgrace that someone with such a scandalous reputation is appointed to manage a municipality that is already in total chaos. “The ANC is engaged in political games, while residents do not receive services and the municipality collapses. The replacement of the administrator is indicative of the total disqualification of the ANC government and the internal fighting within the ANC.”

“No administrator can save Mafube while the disqualified and power-hungry ANC governs the municipality. The mayor of Mafube is grasping at straws by blaming the administrator for the crises in the municipality.”

“It is clear that there is a power game between certain factions within the ANC. The appointment of Matlole points to wrong priorities as the mayor and his troops are only interested in the ANC’s leadership struggle and do not act in the best interest of Mafube,” said Mr. Wessels.
