Brutal murder of Iris Potgieter (64), accused sentenced, Dewetsdorp

The Bloemfontein High Court found Katleho Moeketsi (24) guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder of 64-year-old Dewetsdorp woman, Iris Louisa Potgieter. Katleho was arrested in Mangaung with the victim’s White Volkswagen Golf.

On Wednesday, 25 August 2021, the police at Dewetsdorp Police Station were alerted about a body lying in an open veld near Morojaneng Township.

The patrol vehicle responded and on arrival at the scene discovered the body of an elderly woman covered in blood. The Emergency Medical Services and Police Forensic Analysts were also summoned to the scene and the victim was declared dead.

The Dewetsdorp Station Commander, Captain Mauriza Cremore who was the Detective Branch Commander at that time was assigned to investigate the case. The suspect was arrested following a tip-off by a vigilant resident of Dewetsdorp who spotted the stolen Volkswagen Golf in Mangaung and immediately alerted the police.

The investigation was completed and the trial started.

Katleho Moeketsi was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on the count of robbery with aggravated circumstances and 25 years imprisonment on the count of murder on Friday, 13 May 2022.
