BLOEMFONTEIN, FREE STATE – The Rocklands community in Bloemfontein has rallied in large numbers to support a student teacher following a viral assault video that has sparked widespread outrage. Residents gathered outside a local court to demand justice, arguing that the physical attack should be officially classified as gender-based violence (GBV)rather than common assault.
The controversy centers around a recent incident where a young man allegedly attacked the student teacher in full view of the public. The recorded footage of the alleged assault quickly circulated online, fueling anger throughout Mangaung.
While police have currently charged the accused with common assault, community members and advocacy groups strongly dispute this classification. A representative from MAC for Community Safety in the Free State condemned the attack, specifically highlighting the disturbing role of the accused’s parents. According to the spokesperson, the young man was in the company of his parents during the assault, and they failed to intervene or stop the attack from happening.
The community safety organization expressed satisfaction with the police for making an arrest but announced that they will formally apply to become an interested party in the court case. They intend to push for the matter to be reclassified as a GBV case, citing the severe violation of the victim’s rights.
Meanwhile, a local influencer who helped mobilize the community to support the victim expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming turnout. The spokesperson emphasized that the demonstration sends a powerful message to women who often suffer in silence. They expressed hope that the public outcry will encourage more women to step forward, assuring the community that women will be protected and that justice will be pursued.
The court has postponed the matter to July 15, 2026, to allow for further police investigations. The magistrate noted that the outstanding investigative steps include obtaining a supplementary statement from the complainant, securing a J88 medical form, and gathering photographs. The accused has been released on warning and is required to reappear in court at 8:30 a.m. on the next date.
Community members have pledged to return to the courthouse in large numbers next month to continue their demand for justice.
